Medium breed dogs are a very diverse group. However, what characterizes them best is their inexhaustible energy. Working, playing, running on a free space… that’s what they love most. They are neither as delicate and fragile as many small breed dogs, nor as prone to joint or stomach problems as large breed dogs. Often they are not large dogs, but strong, stocky and athletic, weighing up to 25 kg.
This group includes border collie, beagles, bullterriers, medium poodles, American Staffordshire terriers, most spaniels, Siberian huskies and samoyeds. Medium breed dogs’ growth phase lasts 12 months and it can be divided into two stages. They are not as long-lived as small breeds, but several years old dogs are pretty common. It is important to keep them in proper condition throughout their whole life.
Most of them are active dogs, so their energy needs are quite high, but not
like those of small and miniature breeds. Many of them love eating, which can lead to overweight, if not controlled. Their liveliness and activity enhancesfree radical production and contributes to oxidative stress. It is therefore worth using natural antioxidants in nutrition.
